Abstract

Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) Technology has a promising potential to converse palm oil into biofuel. The process of palm oil conversion by using FCC produces a vapor product that consists of various substances such as gasoline, Light Cycle Oil (LCO), water, and non-condensable gas. However, the condensable compound and the non-condensable gas contained in the vapor product should be separated. The separation process can be carried out through a heat exchanger. The double-pipe heat exchanger might be a good choice among various types of heat exchangers due to its simple configuration and can be easily manufactured. However, the study about double pipe type heat exchangers in FCC systems is still limited. The design calculation procedure of counterflow double pipe type heat exchanger, as a condenser in FCC system, is introduced in this paper. This paper aims to find out how the variation of feed mass flowrate affects the required length of the heat exchanger. It is obtained that the rise of the mass flow rate of the feed would give a more significant heat load and require a greater length of the heat exchanger.
