Abstract

Indonesia is currently the world's biggest palm oil producer with an estimation of about 25 billion liters of palm oil produced per year, followed by Malaysia with approximately 44% and 39% of global exporter and production of palm oil, respectively. Production of palm oil provides an excellent source of biomass, self-sufficient energy for processing at the mill, effective carbon sink, and sustainable practices to continuously feed the demand. In order to meet the operational standard quality both in plantation and mill processing, the certification scheme has been set up by both countries, Indonesia and Malaysia. For Indonesia, all oil palm growers and mill operators must follow the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil Certification Scheme, while Malaysian palm oil producers including plantations, independent and organized smallholdings, and palm oil processing facilities must follow the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil Certification Scheme. Besides making sure the quality of the palm oil produced, this certification scheme aims for sustainable production of palm oil and ensures the competitiveness of palm oil in the global market.
