Construction of tangerang-merak toll road and its impact on society and economic development in the tangerang regency (1990-2005)

This chapter analyzes the impact of the Tangerang - Merak toll road construction on the Tangerang Regency community. Before the Tangerang - Merak toll road was built, Tangerang Regency was an agricultural area. The Tangerang - Merak toll road was built in 1990. After the construction of the Tangerang - Merak toll road, industrial development in Tangerang Regency increased and the peak of development was in Tangerang Regency after being operated by the Tangerang - Merak toll road on December 19, 1996. The development of Tangerang Regency as an agricultural area has turned into an industrial area which has been seen when the JABOTABEK concept was formed. The Tangerang Regency area which is close to DKI Jakarta are one of the causes triggers the development of Tangerang Regency from an agricultural area into an industrial area, beside the main cause is Tangerang - Merak toll road. Differences with previous studies is this study analyzes the supporting facilities in the form of toll roads that have an impact on the community and the development of an area. This research was conducted using heuristic methods, criticisms and interpretations of contemporary writing, newspapers that reported the incident, data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), government and private archives and interviews with people living around the Tangerang - Merak toll road. The conclusion of this chapter is that the Tangerang - Merak toll road has an impact on the Tangerang Regency area both socially and economically. Economically, the existence of this toll road has an impact on the economic growth of Tangerang Regency due to the growth of industry and housing. Socially, the existence of this toll road has an impact on changes in rice harvest and production in Tangerang Regency and changes in the community in Tangerang Regency from an agrarian society to an industrial society.
