Abstract

Several types of magnesium oxide (MgO) has been studied as catalyst for catalytic conversion of ethanol into butanol. The reactions have been conducted at 350 C in batch reactor. MgO catalysts have been characterized by XRD, CO-TPD, and N-physisorption. It was found that of the highest yield of butanol was obtained from MgO synthesized from precipitation method. The highest butanol yield was 2.4% at our experimental conditions. This was attributed to its surface area and basicity.
