Abstract

Background: Blood pressure control is worse in hypertensive patients with metabolic syndrome. Neck circumference has been introduced as an indicator of central obesity and upper body adiposity. Unlike waist circumference, neck circumference neck circumference is not affected by respiratory movements and postprandial abdominal distension. This study aimed to investigate the association between neck circumference and blood pressure among adult population.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia involving 94 subjects aged > 18 years. Anthropometric, neck circumference and blood pressure data were collected together with triglyceride levels, HDL-Cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose.
Results: The mean of the neck circumference was 33.89 cm. Subject’s systolic and diastolic blood pressure were 131.63 + 13.16 mmHg dan 84.26 + 8.01 mmHg. In a Pearson’s correlation analysis, there were positive significant correlation between neck circumference with both systolic blood pressure (r = 0.438, p < 0.001) and diastolic blood pressure (r = 0.385, p < 0,001).
Conclusion: The neck circumference is significantly correlated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure in adult population.
