An evaluation of two triangular plate bending elements based on free formulation and discrete Kirchhoff Mindlin

Abstract

This paper presents the convergence behavior of two triangular plate bending elements based on the free formulation (Felippa-Bergan Triangular element) and discrete Kirchhoff-Mindlin approach (Discrete Kirchhoff-Mindlin Triangular element). FBT element satisfies the patch test and the rigid body motion and constant strain requirements, while the DKMT element fulfills the constant bending patch tests and is free of shear locking. Numerical studies were tested using both elements and the result shown that a small number of elements (N<16), DKMT element gives faster convergence compared to FBT element, but when the number of elements is increased, both DKMT and FBT elements gives satisfying result compared to the reference solution.
