Abstract

The Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) pandemi has raised concerns about the potential failure of exclusive breastfeeding. This study reviews previous studies that describe efforts and support for exclusive breastfeeding in both mothers with COVID-19 and those without. A systematic literature search was carried out in April-August 2021 using databases, namely Pubmed and Scopus, with an article publication time span of 2020-2021 and met the inclusion criteria. 462 articles which are then entered in the elimination stage until the final result is 30 articles that are eligible for a full text review. Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). We identified 30 studies. Efforts to protect the practice of exclusive breastfeeding are carried out through skin contact and rooming-in. This practice includes implementing strict precautions such as wearing a mask, social distancing, and maintaining hand and breast hygiene. All babies born to mothers with COVID-19 who apply health protocols are not infected with COVID-19. Breastfeeding support from health workers, families, communities and health care management cannot be overlooked in ensuring breastfeeding continues during the pandemi and precautions are followed. Health protocols need to be monitored for continued safe breastfeeding through skin-to-skin contact and inpatient care. Social support cannot be neglected to protect exclusive breastfeeding practices and ensure that COVID-19 precautions are adhered.
